No, looks like it is required in Maine:

"Registration Plates – All issued plates must be attached to the vehicle and easy to read."

Depends on the state, it is more common to allow only a rear plate in the south.
I drove to North Carolina from Wisconsin in a friends car and had no problems until we got pulled over coming back into Wisconsin. The cop gave my friend a ticket and told him that the only reason we made it there and back is because some police assume the car is from a state where it is OK and don't look closely enough.

It is probably different from state to state. I am in CA and about 8 yrs ago i got pulled over for not having my front license plate on my car and i was told that "while it is not illegal, it gave the officer a reason to stop me" I don't know what kind of bullshit that is but your best bet is to check the laws in your state.

In California it is required to have a license plate on the front and rear of your car. However, I grew up in California and I've never had a license plate on the front of my car, nor in the decades I have driven this way have I ever received a ticket.
My son recently got a ticket for this infraction so I guess it's one of those selective enforcement laws that the police can use as a reasonable cause for stopping anyone.

Yes it is different from state to state. My friend went to Alabama, there she had no front plate and no problems, came back to Wisconsin where she got a warning to fix the problem. I too was warned about not posting a front plate, the officer stated I was issued 2 plates and thats what I have to post on the vehicle.

Most states require you to have a front and back plate displayed on your vehicle and the ones distribued by the DMV not the ones people like to make that are cute and stuff. This is so it is easy for and officer to identify your car from either the front or back.

Did your friend think the second plate she received when she first registered her car was a spare or something?

Yes, Maine law requires cars to have a front and rear license plate.

Depends on what state you live in. Florida is a one plate state. California is a two plate state.

It does differ from state to state. In Montana, for instance, you had to have a plate both on the front and the back. Here in NC, just the back.

On a personal note...how odd that we have the same name and very similar avatars! lol

Depends on the state. If the state gives you two license plates, you have to display both.
