Let's see Rock and Roll was banned in a lot of states in the 50's for reasons of lewd gesturing and lowering the moral foundation of their youth blah blah blah.... i.e. Elvis
Then banned for going against the norm in American Catholic religion.... the Beatles were temporarily banned from the airways, such as John singing "Imagine". That really pissed off the American politicians... which led to his assassination but that's another question altogether; and the song : My sweet Lord, has 2 versions due to the reference of Hari krishnas, and the Dahli Lhama. and the other Alleluia etc.

In the sixties: the "hippie" generation really shook up the establishment with lyrics about everything that had been edited or banned in the 50's; sex, drugs and Rock and Roll was taking off "sky rockets in flight, afternoon delight ahhhh :D

70's Disco, 80's mixture of Punk, alternative, grunge, goth, pop, rock, many different forms really became more mainstream.
