This is pretty unusual for a one month old. Is he formula fed? Maybe you should try breast feeding, if possible. If it continues, call his ped.

I have also been dealing with this problem. My son who is 3 has been plagued with this problem since birth. Everything I have read and been told is that newborns are not "ALWAYS" regular but if the stool is hard, the baby is not getting enough liquids. My pediatrician recommended water, prune juice, etc...and he was still constipated even when he was breast fed. We used "Happy Tummys" for awhile which is a natural laxative, but only very irregularly. Also, if you have added baby cereals to the diet already, it may be a bit too soon and that is what could be causing the problem. I was told that rice cereals could potentially cause more constipation than say oatmeals. Also, when he got older, the doc put him on more effective "cocktails" if you will of fiber and mineral oil in his morning drink. We use the benefibre now and it works like a charm.

This happened to me also around one month with my daughter. The doctor told me to buy *clear* pedialyte and feed my daughter one ounce, once a day for three days. It worked. I also gave her a warm bath one a day and massaged her belly with warm washcloths. It all worked really well. It's common that this happens to babies, but it's not good by any means. Call your doctor and ask if they would reccommend pedialyte. It worked wonders for me! =)

***My doctor also told me that water is NOT good for the baby at all. They have enough water in there formula and feeding them more can do more harm than good. Also she said that prunes should NOT be given to the baby. They are unable to eat them and can choke and develop food alergies to them. It can also hurt there intestines. She said that they shouldn't recieve prunes or any food or juice besides rice cereal until they are at least 5 months old.***

Ask the Pediatrician what she/he thinks about putting him on Soy formula. My daughter went through this at this age. Our doctor told us to give her 2 ounces slowly of prune juice (YES THIS YOUNG). If it's really hurting the baby... maybe you should help him out by rectal stimualtion with a Q-Tip and some Vaseline... Poor little guy... Good luck!

I can be you might want to take baby lotion and rub his belly. Rub it for a while. You can also lay him in fron of you and grab his feet and knees and push them into his stomach no to hard hes infant. When my son went through this I would stick a thermomiter into the tip of his anal and push it in and out easy dont put alot of the thermomter in his you know what he should poop in no time. Also give him water to drink, it should flush him out

Is he formula fed? If so this can be normal. I would talk to his doctor. My son was a preemie (Almost 3 months early) and the nurses at Children's Hospital used suppositories on him, but because he was so small they had to cut them in half lengthways. If he is pooping everyday or every other day don't worry about it too much, but if it is more than 48 hours call his doctor.

If his poop is coming out in similar to tootsie roll's, you need to call the doc. That is not good and it's painful for him.

If your son is having a hard time passing stool then he is a constipated baby - trust me, I know your pain - I went through 2 months of this with my son!! - What you can do, to help ease the pain he may go throug is mix 2 ounces of prune juice with 2 ounces of water, or if you personally think this is too much (and it's not) - do 1 ounce of water and 1 ounce of prune juice. This really does help, if you notice he hasn't passed stool all day, give him a bottle of this - it will losen things up!! Also they say caro suryup helps, mixing a little bit of light caro (spelling) suryup (2 tablespoons) with 4 ounces of water - this helps as well...I sure hope this helps you out!! God Bless!!!

Not normal. Call the doctor or nurse in the morning.

I know that the doctors say don't give your baby anything but formula or breastmilk for the first 4 months but my son was having the same problem and we gave him baby prunes and it helped him go good. You can also talk to your doctor about some kind of laxative thats safe for your little one to take. Hope it gets better!

my baby was like that at 3 wks.. she was eating enfamil lipil w/ iron.. it was the iron that was causing her to strain while pooping but after a few days she stopped straining and it came out gooey from then one.. my folks recommended diluted apple juice to help it flow better... but talk to his pediatrician before giving him anything besides milk.
