yes they are dangerous. The steve irwin incedent was a bizarre thing---that is so rare that it would happen. But the little stingrays that one is likely to encounter near the beach while wading or swimming with sting you if you step on them. Besides being very painful, the barbs breatk off in you and can be infected. You will need medical treatment. Also some people may have severe allergic reaction to them. So when wading in water where stingrays are present remember to shuffle along so you don't supprise one. Also their numbers are increaseing. One of their main predators, the sharks are decreasing in numbers.

Any wild animal that can take down Steve Irwin is officially dangerous.

The tail has a poisonous barb on it that has a potent toxin. If it's a neurotoxin, your muscles would stop getting the message to contract/beat, including your heart and lungs.
Yikes.

they are really not dangerous animals...the only reason everybody thinks they are dangerous is cause of their barbs....as long as u dont mess with them or disturbed them u will be all right...just do the shuffle when u go to the beach just shuffle ur feet at the bottom of the ocean and they should go away well i hope this helps

If you tread on them or swim over them, they will lash their tail and attempt to spike you. Keep out of their way and they won't bother you.
