China's power is based almost solely on her relationship with the US. That's not likely that will change in fifty years. China's economic miracle is fueled by American consumerism, If America declines, China will too. The EU could definitely outshine the US in fifty years, but trends would have to reverse. Currently there is a wave of anti-family, anti-capitalism, and anti-work that is destroying Europe. Its likely Europe will become the Muslim Caliphate that Osama bin Laden dreams of. This will not make the EU stronger, especially if Britain pulls out - and they would.
HePunksMeNot- the deficit is the amount we spend over the amount we have each year, The 2007 Federal deficit is about 350 Billion a year, while the gross domestic product is about 12 Trillion a year. Even if you add up all of the deficit into the national debt, which is approaching a whopping 9 Trillion! Even if our total debt outstrips our annual GDP the vast size and strength of the US economy can pay this down over the course of several years, kind of like paying your mortgage which would no doubt be much higher than your annual income. If the choice is to have a house to live in or no debt, I'll take the house - just not too big of a house.

Unless the oil is shut off prior to finding new energy sources, the USA will be in the primary position for a long, long time. It may no longer be a republic and instead be a dictatorship, but it will be on top. The EU is fading fast and will probably be number five or less in fifty years. China still has unresolved problems and the Communist Party is holding back their progress. I doubt that the internal strife will destroy them but they won't change relative to the USA. You forgot India. India is projected to have the second largest economy in 25 years and will far surpass the EU. One should also not count out Russia. As the world warms, they will become the world's breadbasket and they already have huge oil and coal reserves. A lot depends on whether they can get rid of people with the Putin mindset.

It should be China with its economy but they have terrible pollution problems that may shoot them in the foot. The USA is in a position of disaster that it may never revoer from. The current deficit is somewhere near three trillion dollars. I don't think it will be either.

I'd look at South Korea. Quietly, their high techonology is gaining amazing ground. Might be worth peeking at some stock options from them now......imagine how well they'll be 50 years ahead.
