The refrigerator in my camper was left closed for several years with butter inside. It continues to work but I am having trouble removing the bad smell. Any ideas out there on how to eliminate this odor? Thanks

Clean it and then put a box of baking soda in it.

here's an inexpensive and fragrance free solution that is perfect for your problem. - I know many other people that use it in their RV's too. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, pets, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just put one or two in fridge and freezer. No spills or chemicals or powder to worry about. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. I think camping world sells it and Internet at customerservice@innofresh.com.
Definitely worth trying

The only thing I use to clean my fridge or microwave that has rotten food in it is plain, cheap vanilla. I once left a bowl of hot cereal in the microwave for a few days while out of town and when we got home the smell was overpowering. Use a spray bottle and spray the fridge down with the vanilla and wipe down, and THEN put baking soda in it.

clean the refrigerator thoroughly with kitchen cleanser such as arm and hammer baking soda as a thick paste, formula 409, or soft scrub.

After cleansing leave it open to dry and air out.

I agree with most of the other answers:
After it is clean, keep an open box of Arm and Hammer in there. A lemon juice or vinegar rinse wouldn't hurt either.

They make Arm and Hammer boxes with peel-off sections on the box that leave a screened panel on the side open. That way the open box doesn't tip and spill.

After you clean it rub lemons amongst the shelves or wherever smely liquid or food might have been. It absorbs the bad smells and kills bacteria. Besides it will smell lemony every time you open it because the light bulb heats it up and extracts the fresh smell, also the baking soda will work so place both just in case. Hope this helps & Good Luck!

After the bleach cleaning, use febreeze and baking soda. Spray the febreeze in there and close the door with an open container of baking soda on the shelf. It may take a few weeks, but it will work.

Good Luck and God Bless.

Clean it first, specially the meat and the vegetable boxes. Do not forget the bottom underneath the boxes. Only after this, put a new opened-top baking soda in the feezer, one in the shell. Now a day, they sell a newly designed baking soda box only for that.
I hope you feel better.

remove everything from your fridge, dispose of everything you think is bad (spoiled) or very close to being bad. remove the shelves and drawers and wash them in your sink or tub like you would your dishes. wash the entire inside of your fridge too. then put an open box of baking soda in your fridge or they also make baking soda boxes especially for the fridge and freezer to absorbe unwanted oders. this also keeps smells from combining one food to another. for more ideas on how to use baking soda go to www.armhammer.com

First wipe it out with a mixture of 1/4 cup bleach to a gallon of water...then try
Coffee grounds in a cup
or
Baking Soda
or
Burn some cinnamon in a disposable pie plate, put it in fridge...it stinks, but removes the smells

Or just use all 3 remedies together!

vinegar or baking soda works for me. You should never use detergents or bleaches to clean them. They will just make you sick if they come into contact with your food and they r bad 4 the environment.

If you keep some baking soda in the fridge, it should keep smells away also
