Physiologically, fear triggers the hormones adrenaline and sometimes dopamine, resulting in a temporary high.

Horror movies, as depressing as they may be, don't necessarily have to depress the viewer. Someone who has just watched, say, Halloween, won't feel bad about their situation when compared to the characters in the movie. Whereas, I know more than one relationship that has ended as a result of the unrealistic expectations set in "The Notebook".

Also, not all scary movies are the same. There's gore, psychological thrillers, slashers, monsters, even cheap and rediculous horror. It's a huge genre. Not everyone who watches horror may like every type of horror movie.

Just like any other genre of movies, there will be people who like it and people who dislike it. Everyone's reasonings will be different.

A report I once read quizzed people after they left romances, thrillers, comedies and horror films, and the people who just finished watching horrors and thrillers left the theater feeling pretty good about themselves while people who watched comedies and romances felt pretty bad about themselves. Scary movies are a form of escapism from real life - with the exception of probably sci fi and fantasy films like Lord of the Rings, horror films are the furthest film from reality, so the audience knows they're not watching something real, it's all pretend. I'm going to try and find the link to the report, it's pretty interesting.

I know I like scary movies for the reason that, everything else is pretty predictable in movies, but in scary movies the predictability is less. Shock factor, is always appealing too =]

Why do people like any movie. You want to not be in reality for 2 hours and get to experience something. When its something scary, you can scream and then come back out and go on with your normal life.

Some violent people like the gore. Or they just like the thrill. Like Jump scenes. A jump scene is when say one guy searches the house when he's done there nothing there. When he turns around BAM the music goes loud and theres someone/something there.

It's the adrenaline, just gets you all hyped up. Making the blood rush. Then you laugh about how scared you got.
