Why do most people in society confuse shyness for pride?

Sample:

So and so never comes to our party. He or she must think they are better than we are.

Shyness does not equal pride!

Some people prefer and/or find inner peace and happiness being alone.

Your view?

I agree with what you are saying. It is just how society is: if you don't conform to their norms, you are stuck up, better, or some such.
Don't let it bother you; it is the same thing as people who smoke trying to get non-smokers to smoke; drinkers trying to get non-drinkers to drink, and so on.
It is the crab theory: if there is a bucket of crabs, and one almost succeeds in escaping, the others will pull the one attempting to escape back down. They want everyone in it together. It is the same with humans.
Just be yourself.
