He is mistaken with a microwave oven (just don't try tanning in one of those). Tanning ages the skin prematurely and can cause skin cancer even from a tanning booth. At least, that is what the experts say. However, the US Census shows that people who work outside for a living and do not use sunscreen have a significantly lower chance of having skin cancer then people who avoid the sun and use sunscreen religiously. Contradicting points as it appears that a tan shields the skin from cancer based on the census data. I guess early-aging skin is a bad thing but the question you have to answer for yourself is, is that and the other information enough not to do it?

I highly doubt that tanning "cooks your insides" more than laying in the sun does. However, tanning is much more harmful in than the sun.
For instance, 1/2 hour in the bed = 8 hours in the sun
I would do those spray tans (make sure not to go to a cheapy one or you'll come out like an oompa loompa) or those self tanners along with a regular sun tan.
But it's your life and do whatever you like! You only live once, and you can't be too self health concious ALL the time.

Yeah, you should definitely stop tanning or cut down a lot. However, not because of what your friend said, no you're no being cooked. However, the rays that cause the melanin to build up in your skin (causing the nice golden tan) also cause mutations that eventually lead to cancer. Also, it's been shown that people that spend less time in the sun look much more young later in life. So basically, to avoid cancer and looking 60 at age 40 you should stop.

Everyone needs to do their research. NOBODY can determine how long in a tanning bed equals in the sun. The reason for this is because you can't control how much UVA & UVB you get in the sun because it always changes. Tanning Beds are "smarter" than outdoors because it is controlled.
Tanning indoors or Outdoors in moderation can be healthy because of the Vitamin D you get. Everyone needs the SUN whether it is indoors "Controled" or outdoors. Moderation is key. Never Sun Burn. Research is showing Vitamin D produced through the skin "natural" is actualling preventing or lowering the risk all kinds of diseases and cancers.
Who funds the American Cancer Society? Did you know cosmetic companies? What do these cosmetic companies sell? Sun Screens. So it is no wonder they want to SCARE you out of the sun so you will buy more of their sun screens. Instead they should be teaching moderation for your health! Check out what is in those sun screens and how dangerous those chemicals are. Those sun screens are causing cancer.

Honey, it doesn't cook your insides, however, it is still bad for you. Technically any sun exposure is bad for you and can result in a later formation of skin cancer, but, a tanning bed is actually worse.... 20 minutes in a tanning bed is the equivalent of 8 hours in rhe real sun.
Hope this helps. :-)

The old tanning beds are dangerous; however, the tanning industry has seen a surge of interest in red light tanning beds as owners realize that it is a new revenue center that can help to alleviate the drop from the loss of UV tanners over the past two years. The key to a new red light therapy tanning bed is the research and design aimed at maximizing results in as little time as possible. They must use it on a consistent basis over a period of 3 months to see results. The recommended regiment is 3 visits per week for 12 weeks then 2 visits a week after that. The recommended exposure time is 15-20 minutes.

actually all tanning is bad for you. the tanning of the skin is actually sun damage. i don't know about it cooking you from the inside, but you definately do cook yourself. when i get older I don't want my skin to look like a worn out leather sack, so i just keep my sun exposure limited to 10 minutes....or if i'll be outside longer, i'll wear a hat.

Tanning, in a bed or on the beach, won't damage your insides, but it will damage your skin, rendering it more likely to develop skin cancer. One form of this, malignant melanoma, must be treated immediately as it will otherwise be lethal.

It doesn't "cook your insides," but it contributes to skin cancer...not to mention wrinkles and "leathery" skin as an adult.
Tanning is definitely bad for you.
Use a self-tanning lotion. They have gotten much better recently.
