Wow. That is a loaded question. Well, lets takes this one step at a time and examine New England. Yup, that's where we go to the Separatists and the Puritans. These colonies were founded by highly religious people without much economic interest. For example, a good quote to make would be John Winthrop, the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony wanting to create a "city on a hill", that the world might see them and know how to live.

The Middle, I'm guessing is referring mostly to Virgina. This was created solely for economic gain, with little religious motives. This process was utterly failing until John Rolfe started growing tobacco. However, it is possible that the Middle could refer more to Pennsylvania or New York, which both have completely different stories. PA, founded by William Penn, was a colony for Quakers, or Society of Friends. They were under heavy persecution in England, and this provided a good escape. New York was first settled by the Dutch (New Amsterdam).

The South could refer to different areas. Georgia was founded by convicts in a futile effort to grow silk. This failed but other crops such as rice and the future King Cotton helped to make the South successful.

I believe that New Englanders started with religious pursuits; Middle (is that what it's called?) was either trading or gold prospecting, but deff. profit; and South was founded on tobbaco and cotton farming so more profit than anything.
