Yes, My university does it all the time, there are even signs saying 'do not switch off'. The only issue is that the room might get too warm and you waste electricity.

Even network computers that are meant to be on for long periods of time need to be powered down. I would recommend powering down a Home computer at least once a week. Most have a lot of programs running in the background that will reduce the memory available to you if you don't. If you leave your computer up all the time and you have an open Internet connection at all times IE Cable, DSL. You need to make sure you have a good firewall(not defaulted), up to date virus software and a good cookie cleaner. If not your computer is more likely to get viruses and some one may take it over. This is what most businesses spend the most money on and they still have problems. What is the correct answer? You can leave your computer up all the time, but it will cost you to do it. Its how I make my money.

Generally, yes, it is okay. You should set it to standby or hibernate and to turn off the monitor to save energy when it is unused.

The debate over whether it is better to avoid subjecting your computer to the rigors of starting up and shutting down, compared with the extra wear of letting it run has been long debated. I generally leave mine on unless it will be unused for a few days.

Also, I find it runs better after a restart if it has been on for a while. This will dump the RAM and end any useless processes that may be running and slowing things down.
