I am pretty sure that the baby has to be able to sit up with support. I ended up using our Bumbo as a highchair for a few months and it worked great! They even make a tray that you can snap onto the Bumbo.

i put her in the highchair when I fed her cereal at 4 months. She could sit up by then. Good luck!

I started my son about 3 weeks ago (when he was 4.5 months). His highchair has a slight recline position. At grandma's houses he also sits in one but it does not recline so I stick a towel in front of him for support. I think it makes him feel like a big kid when he sits at the table with the rest of us.

When they can hold their head up on their own, and if the highchair has shoulder straps if they cant sit on their own.

I don't think it really matters. They make highchairs that almost lay completely back now.

I started sitting mine in the high chair as soon as they learned to sit up. What is that about 3-4 months old or something. My little girl sat in her high chair and ate the level 1 Gerber foods. Just please, make sure they are fastened in. High chairs can be very dangerous for children of any age.

Six months is usually recommended for starting solids.

This is about when they can sit up as well.

So a good generalisation is 6 months, but every baby is different!

They should be pretty much sitting on their own.
We waited the recommended 6 months to start solids and he was sitting up great by then.

I would say when they can hold their heads up and support themselves good but that doesnt mean that they are old enough to start eating solid foods.

Generally the rule is when they are able to sit up in their own with no problems.
