Ditto to the previous two posts. Not a good idea at all due to the effects on hardness and pH.

Real seashells will leach calcium carbonate into your water and raise the PH level and hardness of your water. This may be good or bad, depending on what the current PH and hardness of your water is and what you want it to be.
Guppies generally like hard, alkaline water and some people actually put crushed shell grit into their substrate to raise their PH, so if this is the case for you, then go ahead and add sea shells. However, if the PH of your tank is where you want it to be and you only want to add shells for looks, try fake plastic shells, or coat the shells in some kind of plastic or non-toxic coating first. I add sea shells to all my community tanks because I love the look of them in there, but since I have naturally hard water, I coat them in marine grade clear epoxy resin first. It is guaranteed non-toxic for fish, is completely waterproof and prevents the shells from leaching anything and altering the PH of my water.
Also, the people who told you that you shouldn't keep guppies with goldfish are right. They are fish that have very different temperature preferences.

Absolutely not. Seashells will leach calcium carbonate, which will make your water very hard - not good for most fish. Use the fake kinds you see in the store, if you want that look.

The poster above me is exactly correct--I just wanted to mention that goldfish are coldwater fish and need the temp around 65 degrees, while guppies are tropical and like it around 77. You can't mix them...

Just boil them in hot water for 20 minutes. This will get rid of any salt deposits and parasites that could harm your fish.

Natural ones will raise the hardness and/or the pH of your water, but fake ones won't. Don't use the natural ones but you can run the fake ones under hot water to remove bacteria and germs.
