depends on how you define close. Walnut Creek is a suburb of SF and is 30 miles to the east of san francisco. I still consider that close.
If you travel in non-commute times it should take no more than 35 minutes by car. If in commute time it could take easily an hour. Non-commute hours are 6am - 9am and 3pm - 6pm Monday - Through friday. It is bad going from WC to SF in the morning and then again from SF to WC in the afternoon.
you could also do bart which is about 35 - 40 minute train type ride. It is the same whether commute time or not.
there are no buses that I know of that go between the two cities. So car or bart is your best bet.

If you get a motel or a hotel in Marin County, (which is just north of san Francisco) the are places that are pretty inexpensive along HWY 101 going north through Strawberry and Mill Valley. or about another 5 miles up the road in san Rafael, there are lots of places. The golden gate bridge is only about 5 miles from Mill Valley and the drive is a lot easier than going to and from Walnut Creek. You probably would have a hard time finding a decent place in san Francisco for much less that $300.00 and you certainly don't want to stay in the tenderloin.

It's on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay in Contra Costa County. You can either drive there via the Oakland East Bay bridge or take the BART train that runs to Concord and get off in Walnut Creek.

No, WC is not very close to San Francisco. It's about 25 miles east of the city, about a 30-35 minute drive w/o traffic. During commute hours, which are 6-9am and 3:30-6:30pm about (which another poster had backwards), the drive can take at least 45-60 minutes. BART takes about 35 minutes to get into Downtown SF. And WC is a lot more than 30 minutes from Santa Cruz, try more like 75-90 minutes.

Sure. Take Bay area rapid transit to the city. Takes about 25 minutes or so.. You can drive. Not sure about the mileage, but depending on the traffic.. maybe 30 minutes or so. longer if you need to find a parking space.

What does very close mean to you? It's about 35 minutes on the train.

- 22 miles in distance.
- Time is totally dependent on when you go and how (e.g. driving at rush hour is not recommended; take BART instead)
- A world apart in attitude

Absolutely! It's just about 20-30 minutes away, depending on traffic if you drive. Take the train like she mentioned above, it's soo much easier.
