I'm not saying I'm going to, I'm just curious. Is there a law in New York that says you can't? I know you must have parental consent to get married before age 18 but what about engagement? And if the person 16 years of age is engaged, are the parents allowed to break them up?
Once again, I am just curious.
Thank you for your time.

I've had seven boyfriends before. One was for a year. And the rest ranged from 1 month-6 months. lol. I started early. But I am a virgin, I don't believe in sex before marriage. It's against my religion as a Born-Again Christian and I grew up in a Christian family and was raised in a Church, pretty much.
But I'm really am just curious. I'm not saying I'm gonna run off with my boyfriend of six months and get married illegally.

And I know I want a commited relationship. I pretty much had my whole life planned out for me. I'm going to College once I graduate to study film production and I want to marry young and have kids before I turn 30. Only because I work in a Nursing Home and I've realized that most of them are still married because they married young. I don't know.
But you guys are right, I'm young and I have my whole life a head of me. But I've always been independent and I want to start my life early. But not too early.
Thank you guys!

There's nothing legal or illegal about engagement. It just means you plan to marry "sometime." Children under the age of 18 must do as their parents wish. So, they CAN tell you you can't see a certain boy. You can sneak to see him and they can have you adjudged "delinquent." But, most parents wouldn't go that far. If you get engaged, just plan the wedding for after your 18th birthday. I have a better idea, though. Plan to go to college together and get married after you graduate together. That will be the best thing possible for your children. (My husband and I worked our way through college together.)

you can get engaged at any age.. there's no legal papers or anything that says when you're engaged.
So yes.. a 6 year old could give a 6 year old a plastic bubble gum machine ring, propose, say yes, and then they're engaged. it's the same as 25 year olds getting engaged with a 3 million dollar diamond ring. Well, not the same, but you know what i'm saying. Lol.
but to your other question, the parents could still break up the underage couple if they wanted, just like if they were dating.

Sara, being engaged at 16 is too young. You haven't even grown up yet. You really don't know what you want from life, or who you are. You are still growing. Give yourself a chance. Being married is a commitment for life. You want to be sure you know what you are getting into and who with. It takes a long time to get to know some one, you have to date for a few years first. You have to know your values, your interests and your plans for the future. You have to know your intendeds too. At 16 people are not mature enough, or experienced enough to really know these very important things about them selves or others. Date a lot of guys. Don't even go steady in high school. See what kind of guys you like. Have them take you places and don't get serious, it can cause a lot of problems, like unwanted pregnancies, that kind of thing. You will never be 16 again so enjoy every moment of it. Soon enough you will be having to deal with life on your own. Right now you are being taken care of so relax and have fun.

An engagement ring is a promise from him to you of marriage some day. Its not illegal to become engaged at 16 but they should really think about being tied down to one person, and once the girl accepts the engagement ring, that is it as far as their dating any other boys. be sure its love before you get engaged to him.

I don't think its illegal anyplace because its just a promise between the two involved. There's no legal standing as far as I know. Now, on the list of the stupidest things a 16 yr old can do this would have to be right up there, but you're probably safe as far as the law is concerned.

You can become engaged at any age, like you said you have to be 18 to marry but there is no law saying you can't be engaged when you want....

You can get engaged at two, you can get engaged at birth (arranged marriage). Engagement is not a legal process the law cannot break it up. However, your parents are still your guardians and yes, they can break it up.
