i have a cousin named Irah Colleen. her name means "a watchful little girl". ira is watchful in hebrew and colleen is irish/gaelic in origin meaning girl/little girl. but the popularity of the name originates in north america. my cousin colleen is smart and talented but she has this way of choosing who she only wants to be with and to talk with. she's quite a snob, that is. and she's only in her pre-teens. oh well, she really lives up to her name being so watchful.
but she's pretty. just like the singer and dancer Vitamin C (her real name is Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick). i really like her.

"Colleen" is the generic word for a girl in Ireland, the same way they use "Sheila" in Australia. In Ireland itself, they don't actually name their daughters Colleen very often. It would be like naming your daughter "Girl" in the United States. I think it IS done more often now than it used to be, though.
The popularity of Colleen, along with other -een names such as Maureen and Charlene, peaked around the 1950's and pretty much fell off the charts by 1980. Most people named Colleen would therefore be at least in their thirties. It was an average, typical, popular name in its day, much like the Chelseas and Kaylas of today. Therefore the stereotype of a person named Colleen tends toward middle class, blending into the crowd, a nice person but maybe fairly nondescript. Not that I think you personally fit that description, but that's the mental image. :)

My name is Colleen and I like my name very much! My father picked it out. Everywhere I go, people always comment on it. I am one of those girls that never wanted to change my name until I saw that there were not very many pencils with it on it. Remember those days! Thank goodness now they have stickers you can put on yourself. I am in my thirties and loving it! I say Colleen is a great name. Go for it. Of course, I

I have known a few Colleens and nothing prticular stick out about their personality. I love the name!
I looked up the meaning and it is derived from the gaelic word for girl which is cailin. Even though it has Irish roots it is not a name used in Ireland.
Good luck!

Uhmm.. the only predictable characteristic someone with that name can have is that their name is colleen. u cant judge someone by their name, ur personality is based on who you are, not what ur name is..
