If you've been a server in a restaurant, tell me about it. How crazy does it get back there in the kitchen? Would u recommend a server job to anyone?

It can get crazy in the kitchen when you get a rush, but if you work in a good kitchen you will see the organiztion of the mess.
I loved serving, despite my constant complaints, and would go back to it if I could. In fact I plan to soon.
The tips can be (though not always) great. I loved going home everynight knowing I had money without having to wait on a check.
Good luck if you decide to serve, it can be hectic but will give you a greater appreciation for the food-service industry.

It can be very wild. I have seen people do crazy things once the get to the back. I would not reccommend a serving job to anyone. Just because you have dined out does not mean you are ready to work. I would start off with an entry position before serving (host or busser), but let the employer know that you want to move up to a server.

Serving is a great job to have if you are going to school. It gives you great flexibility. If you decide you want to serve as a career, you should know that serving is hard on your body and mind. Just because the people here say that you should know a little more about restaurants before you start does not mean that everyone hires that way. Most of the frustration in a restaurant comes from people who do not seem to care about their job.

I would recommend it only to those who have an idea of how the business runs.
Some "have it" and some don't.
If it was someone who starts off as a host or busser, and are good at it, I would tell them to go for it.
The kitchen can get crazy, and depending on the cooks, it can get edgy as well. Some cooks/chefs can have a real attitude when it comes to returning a steak etc....all ego, ya know? And you have to be able to take the pressure from the kitchen and the public all at once.
It's really not a job just anyone can do.

Yes. It's what I always called "an organized mess". WE know what we're doing even though it may look like chaos and there's yelling. We're all still friends when the burners are shut off. The cooks depend on the servers as much as the servers depend on the cooks. If a server interrupted me, I'd be snippy at them. I only meant it at that moment. I'd be hot, sweaty, stressed, and a zillion things on my mind. But at the end of the night, I always thanked them and apologized. They understood. So if you can take hearing a lot of swearing and the occasional tongue-lashing, you'll be fine. You can make a lot of money in tips if you work hard. Ignore the cooks' attitudes and just do what they tell you to and plaster a smile on your face when you leave the kitchen.
