Your question was a simple one...yet see how many replies you received? There is power in a word, any word, and this is a good example of why you need to be specific. I believe what you wanted to ask was, "how do you pronounce the word "poem"? Is it "po' em", or "pome" as in "home"? correct? The answer is that the first pronunciation is correct. However, there is only a very minor hesitation between syllables and the accent is soft on the first syllable, "not" pronounced like "Bohemme" (Bo hemme')...which is probably why you asked for the correct pronunciation to start with (if it was obvious you wouldn't have had to ask).

In case you were asking about something spelled "pome": Pome is a "fleshy fruit, such as an apple, pear, or quince, having several seed chambers and an outer fleshy part largely derived from the hypanthium"...so they may sound similar, but there is little similarity in meaning.

I've known a few "pretentious" people who thought they sounded more intellectual by mispronouncing words like "poem"...so I appreciate your effort to get the word right in your mind and in your ear. Like I said, words are important and powerful, and you need to understand not only what they mean, but how they sound, because sound is far more important in poetry than it is in prose.

Being as you used your computer to ask this question you may want to take a moment and type the word that you are trying to spell correctly in "Word" then click on tools and check your spelling. I frequently use it and the added benefit is that it can help you build your vocabulary.

There's only one correct way, and that's "poem." Two syllables.
