Trying to be constructive in light of events that occurred this week in Melbourne when there was a confrontation between a bunch of skater youth and an elderly priest which was filmed by the youth and posted on youtube.

Barb Outhere has a point. We all know respect is an issue. What can be done about it?

Is there an equal lack of respect toward them also? Most answers so far seem to point toward this? I know that if i see a bunch of kids hanging out and I try and avoid them (instantly judge them) then they feel it and react, however if I interact with them (Say G'day as I walk past) there's no problem and they're quite polite.

What do they lack? Self discipline, self control, an aim in life beyond instant gratification, direction, good role models, a stable society, good leaders, a faith, an education system that guides them to be better members of society, parental control, parents that care, parents that have the skills to raise them, and/or stable family life.
WE can go on and on about what's missing. But what we all need to find is how to make it better, for them, and so for the rest of us.

ahhh yes this is the perfect question for me, but you ask what does youth want. well first of all it is not only youth that skates, i have seen skaters from the age of 3 to the age of 80 it is a sport for all ages, it is great exorsize, promotes imagination which then stimulates the mind so there for it is healthy for the internal and external of the body, plus there are less people that get hurt skateboarding than there is riding bikes, base ball, foot ball and pretty much every other sport.

And also skaters just want to skate and be left alone, skating is a life style, sport, and art form. It allows every person to be different in there own way without some coach yelling at them telling them its wrong. Personaly i have been arrested one time for skating but herrassed many, police officers do get violant sometimes.

But mainly skaters.... we just want to be accepted, we just want a place to be, almost every town has a baskit ball cort, a football feild, a soccar feild and a tennis cort. And what makes those sports so much better than skateboarding that they actually get to have places to do it without being herrassed by cops and people, there are 10s of millions of skaters just in america.

to me skateboarding is the greatest sport. It allows anyone not mater what age, how much money they have, what they look like or how small or short they are to do it, its healthy for the body and mind, its artistic, it has no coach screaming at you, it doesnt cost that much money, its not sexist, you dont have to worry about being set out because maybe you cant do it as fast as the other guy, its just a complete stress free sport, no practice times, it just the skater that decides everything, tottal freedom

If yout town doesnt have a skatepark, fight for one, and make sure skaters are involved in desigining it because some town just think they can throw a cupple ramps down and the skaters will be happy but no they will just keep skating the streets, it has to be good.

Skaters are always going to skate no matter what, you cant stop them. not me, not any of them, this is who we are, this is what we do, to take skating away from us would be like taking the air you breath away from you, is that right? is that reall what a " free " country should do?

Look up DC skate plaza, thats what they need to build

It seems to me that youth today want what they want and aren't open-minded enough to realize that there is a difference between wanting and needing.

What they really lack is positive role models who go without their wants and still live a happy life. 'Role models' like Beckham or Paris Hilton who exude an "all about me" attitude are sending the wrong signals to our impressionable youth.

In response to the respect issue, I totally agree. I am shocked by the way youth treat not only their elders, but also each other. The nine year old I nanny gets a lot of lectures on respect from both me and his parents. He has the idea that if he wants to play something than his brother has to play, but if his brother wants to play something than his brother is just being selfish. It's the "treat others how you want to be treated" issue, it's just not understood.

Empirical evidence shows us that the more people suffer, the more they tend to turn to God for answer. We saw that in the hours, days, and weeks after September 11, 2001. But as amount of peacetime begins to outnumber wartime, as prosperity replaces poverty, as calm weather replaces droughts and floods, and plentious food replaces famine, it's as if we cease to focus on the blessings that we've received and instead forget our reliance on God.

THIS generation has it better than any other, with more innovation, more jobs, more disposable income. THIS generation isn't expected to work in the fields or in the sweat shops. THIS generation doesn't worry about where its next meal is going to come from. Then generation is spoiled.

Toss in the fact that we ALL take God's blessings for granted then we see that this generation SEES and HEARS fewer prayers than any generation before it, this generation attends services less than any generation before it, and ... this generation doesn't even allow God in its schools.

And your surprised by disrespect and violence? It will ONLY get worse!
