How do you get the usb ports on a dell ultrasharp to work?

I've had a dell ultrasharp flat screen monitor for a while now and i have never gotten the usb ports on the monitor to work? How do you get them to work?

hook a usb a to b cable to the usb input port on the monitor to an open usb port on the computer, then u can use it as a hub.
