The guitars I want to choose from are Gibson Les Paul standard or classic, Gibson SG standard, Fender American series HSS Stratocaster, and Fender American Telecaster.

Either the Les Paul or the Tele would probably best for the tone your going for.

Any of those guitars would be great, you can't go wrong with any of them. A lot of country players like teles because of their "twang", take a look and you'll start to see country players that guitar a lot with the strat a really close second. However I've seen Greg Allman play a Les Paul, Dickie Betts too, I like the edge of the strat/tele, but I used to have a friend that played a Les Paul that I loved too. They all sound and play well, so I'd say see which one you like the feel of and choose that.

All of those are good guitars. However.... with the all around variety of rock, southern rock and country I would go with the strat. The SG I think might be a bit heavy for hte country songs and the Telecaster a bit weak on the rock stuff.

i know the first two models you mentioned. the Les Paul was used by artists such as slash (Formerly in guns n roses now in velvet revolver) guns n roses. as for the gibson SG, Angus Young from AC/DC made it popular. what kind of musician do you see yourself as? in your case i would go with the les paul because if you use the standard '62 SG you wont get as much sound boosts and affects because it is an older model

my first choice would be the Tele; it's the quintessential country guitar, and as far as rock goes, Jimmy Page recorded the first two Led Zep albums with one, too. Dialed into the right rig setup, you can have the twang, the bite, or the grit for just about any style of music (especially yours) you would want. If you really want the full range for all, throw a couple of EMG pickups into it, and turn the bridge pickup upside down (180 degrees) for a warmer, richer sound when just playing the bridge setting. it takes the shrill tone right out of the signal. seriously, look into this.

I'm going to be different here. I truly love my SG, but in your case the Am. Std. Strat HSS would probably cover more bases.
