You cannot typically buy a Rolex watch off the street. There are fakes all over the place. The real Rolex has very precise hand movement, which is what makes it give accurate time. The hand movement is smooth, unlike the fakes which have a jerky hand movement. Believe me, you will get exactly what you pay for if you buy it off the streets.

As well as what everyone else has said, I also believe it has something to do with the sound, or lack thereof. A real Rolex, because the second hand does not jerk, but moves continuously, will be silent.

On a real rolex the "second" hand rotates continuously.
(as opposed to ticking in a jerking motion for each second.)

For me, the red flag would be the salesperson on the street and not in a jewelry store. However, I prefer my Armatron. It was cheap in price (under $25) and has stayed very good in the past six years.

When my dad was over seas he bought a fake one for 40$.
He took it to a watch place and they could not tell the difference.
So if it’s a fake it could be a very good fake.
