No it is not illegal for them to force you to wear a school uniform. It puts students on an even footing. Kids are too wrapped up in what they and other kids are wearing to actually focus on what they are going to school for....To learn. Students that come from poor families cannot afford to pay big money for name brand clothing so idiots that have nothing better to do pick on them. Uniforms stops some of the teasing. If you don't want to wear a uniform go to a different school.

In my opinion, if a public school has a uniform policy that it enforces, then it needs to provide the uniforms. If they make the parents pay for the uniforms, then it should be tax deductible since people already pay taxes that go towards the education system.
A private school is different.

Arguably, it would be a 1st Amendment violation for a public school to mandate a particular school uniform.
Dress codes that limit the range of what you can wear are one thing (and legal). Mandating one specific outfit is another.
A test case on exactly this issue is current heading to federal court somewhere in the midwest.

Many schools do.
Not illegal.
There is no "good reason" not to wear them beyond, "I don't wanna"
