I think you will find that they are only obligated to offer you the choice of relocation or redundancy, the law does vary a lot from country to country though and in the case of government run/owned companies sometimes different laws exist altogether.

I worked for a company that moved to another state to break the union of their production workers after a nasty strike. I know for certain that they did not offer any union members a chance to go to the new place.

They can choose to offer an employee a chance to relocate to the new location (but little financial reimbursement for the move) but are not obligated to.

When we moved they paid travel costs (beyond the previous commuting costs) and let us check into a local motel and eat out as many nights as we wanted during the first few months.

no. but if there are any employment contracts, they would have to abide to its provisions; (ie. severance packages).
