How do I beat PS2's Evil Dead - Fistful of Boomstick?

I'm at the end. There's a door in front of me with a runic lock.
I have the Dispel Runic Lock spell, which my spellbook says is to hit X five times. It will not work, no matter how I try it. I hold R1, Ash raises the book, I hit the X's, and he bungles the spell.

I saw this same question on FAQ sites, always unanswered. It's a terrible place to get stuck in a game, over something that should be so simple!

dlevere - this was one of the walkthroughs I searched. This guy just says to cast it. (I thought of that). He says nothing about difficulties.
