That really depends on your idea of "polite". Your best bet would be to ask the local backstabbing ***** they have plenty of experience in that.
I tend to cover up insults in conversation, if you dont pause to let them figure it out most of the time they wont even notice

Can't think of anything else other than "You're breath stank." I'd get gum for myself and ask "Want a peice?" If they refuse, I'd say "No, really it's okay, just try it, it's really good!" :)
