Like the other vet tech above said, they can have water up until the time they are admitted into the hospital. Old ways were to withold water after midnight...that only leads to dehydration which is serious in pets going in for surgery. A couple of hours without water is all he needs--it empties quickly from the stomach.

They usually recommend not to give your dog any food or water the night before the surgery. They say this b/c sometimes during anesthesia the dog will throw up and suffocate while they are under anesthesia. That is why humans and dogs shouldn't have anything in their stomach during surgery. If you vomit while you're asleep, you're just going to suffocate.

Usually the vet will recommend no water after say, ten o'clock in the evening before the surgery. It's the same as with people. Anything on their stomachs, including water, could make them sick mixed with the anesthetics they use for the surgery.

Always best to ask the vet that will be doing the operation. Really he/she should have told you. I know my cat couldn't eat the night before but i can't remember about the water.
