Hi,

Since 2(L + W) = P then
2(9x + 3x) = 120
2(12x) = 120
24x = 120
x = 5

So the length of 9x equals 9x = 9(5) = 45" <== answer
The width wold be 3x = 3(5) = 15"

2(45 + 15 ) = 2(60) = 120, so it checks.

I hope that helps!! :-)

Perimeter= all sides added together

P=3x+3x+9x+9x
P=24x

you know that P=120in
so:
120=24x solve for x:

120/24=X X=5

substitute 5 in for length X:
9*5 =45inches

Perimeter Formula

P = 2L + 2W

let

9x = Length

3x = Width

120 = 2(9x) + 2(3x)

120 = 18x + 6x

120 = 24x

120 / 24 + 24x / 24

120 / 24 = x

5 = x

Since 9x = length

9(5) = 45

45 = length

since width equals 3x

3(5) = 15

15 = Length

The equation one uses to solve the perimeter of a rectangle is: P = 2L + 2W

120 = 2(9X) + 2(3X)
120 = 18X + 6X
120 = 24X
------ ------ (division bar)
24 24

X = 5
The length of the rectangle is 5 inches
