Let's face it--we do to some degree like to hear about others' troubles. It makes us feel better about ourselves, like our life isn't so bad if they're going through something worse. So the media loves to report other people's screw ups because that's what people tune in to hear.

Who would watch the news if all you hear about is average joe's good life? The bad stuff is better publicized. It's stupid--I think there should be a balance. But then I probably watch the news about 20 min a week because I don't need it bringing me down.

It's quite obvious luck is on both sides of the tree. It works for the 'good' people, and for the 'bad' people. But when you've had your own unfortunate day and you come home, turn on the news, and hear about some guy who is in the same shoes as you but he had more chances at life, was rich growing up, and was good natured when you are not. Makes you feel somewhat... secure in deceiving yourself that it's not your fault of someone like him could do it too. Bad people are made good to be publicised better.
Better publicised for sure.

When good people go bad and we don't know the difference, do we know the difference? Or are you saying we are all born bad and learn good.

When Good People Turn Bad - Philip Zimbardo in conversation
In 1971, 23 American college students' lives were changed by the now notorious Stanford Prison Experiment. For the eminent psychologist responsible, Philip Zimbardo, the parallels to the atrocities at Abu Ghraib are palpable. In an exclusive Australian interview, he joins Natasha Mitchell, to reflect on the capacity in all of us to commit evil. It's a case of good apples put in bad barrels. Read Transcript

Yes, because people are generally suckers for tragedy, it's what sells on the news. If you actually look around more bad things happen to bad people because in being bad they often bring trouble upon themselves, but inevitably by accident or a 'bad' person's hand the good guys get hurt. Nothing is completely fair no matter what way you spin it.

The sermon on the mount in at least some English translations goes something like:
He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
even as far back as when the new testament was written people noticed that good things happened to both good and bad people. I would say this can be extended to bad things happen to both the good and the bad.

If bad stuff only happened to bad people that would mean the universe was fair and I would deserve all the bad stuff that happens to me, so I am grateful that bad stuff happens to good people.

The ability to rebound after 'bad stuff' is what defines you as a person. Perhaps we only hear of the people who don't bounce.
