I live in Boston and the stars here are for structural support. There are rods that go through the star and floor joists to keep the brick veneer from bulging out and falling. If you notice there will be a nut on the outside of the star.

Edit your question and give some details about what stars you are talking about.
Families in the US who have members serving in the armed services will display a star in the front window.
I have a big star on my house at Christmas time which is lighted.
I'm not sure what kind of star you mean. By the way, tell us what city and country you live in where we can see the stars.
g-day!

As far as I know, the star is just the fad of the day; just like when everyone started using grapevine wreaths on their doors. I'm not aware that it symbolizes anything beyond just being a decoration...

some Texans have them for the Lone Star State. I think they get them at Pottery Barn. They just think they look nice.
Also, it may signify that they have loved ones serving in Iraq. There used to be something like that in my old neighborhood.

If it's in December in the US, the stars are probably Christmas decorations.

Around here that would be a Moravian star. I don't know if that is what you are talking about. They hang them year around to show they are of Moravian decent. Evita

felixthe cat has the right idea..it's a decoration but, lets you know they are into the "country" look inside...years ago they used to have them on barns ( at least that's what they tell me), don't think they serve any utilitarian purpose..
