Other than shutting them down from time to time and putting them on standby mode. Are there any products that can help them stay cool?

All laptops have fans and mine isn't covered. But it seems to always heat up about after an hour of use. if even that.

Power supplies, battery chargers, Batteries, Circuits, CPU Chips. When running, they all run warm. There are many different cooling pads. Some with fans that run off a USB port. Many of these are metal grids of sorts, that help airflow underneath.

The demand for cooling running laptops just might weed out the really hot ones. Let's put it this way, if it's too hot, you won't have it in your lap for long.

Some CPUs are designed specifically for laptops to run cool. The Intel Centreno is one example. But the demand for Core 2 Duo and other desktop-like CPUs is high.

In general, there should be a HEAT INDEX, so when you are shopping for a laptop, you can tell which one run HOT. This would be no different then showing the dimensions of the screen; indicating typical battery life, CPU speed and other specs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Why Do Laptops Get Hot

GTB above is spot on !

Are you placing the laptop on a table or flat hard board or similar.
Else, this is a common cause for overheating. Air intake is mostly at bottom & gets choked off.
Cleaning your intake & exhaust ports should help too

If these are taken care of, you should normally not encounter overheating issues

If yet they persist, maybe we have to look at build
Desktop processors are indeed used in rare cases & if you can tell us make / model, maybe we can locate culprit
__ __ __ __ __ __

My senior friend, above me ., pointed to core 2 duo processors
Now, this family comes in 2 versions > desktop & mobile
I have personally yet to come across a laptop with the desktop version of the core 2 duo processors > e4x00 / e6x00 / e6x50 , as also the quad cores qx6x00
The mobile core 2 duo are termed merom > t5x00, t5x50 / t7x00 & are the most efficient processors available., and yes this entire processor family easily qualifies for the 'centrino' label from intel ... so they run coolest
as far as 'heat index' ; yes loads of data sheets, benchmarks etc available, should you need them

Yep, they have little shelves that elevate the laptop to stand above the junk on your desk.

An alternative would be to clear off the junk on your desk at the 'left side' of the laptop you're facing. If that's not where the fan is, just locate the fan and clear off the space around it.

If the ambient temperature is too warm or if there is not enough air flow you will have an overheating issue.

Do all you can to promote air flow - don't block the exhaust or intake ports, make sure the fan is working, make sure dirt is not blocking things.

Not much else can be done

on most laptops there is a very small fan on the edge of the bottom part of the laptop. make sure that that isn't covered when or after u use it, that will help tremendously!

A while back many of the batteries on laptops where recalled. you might have one of those defective batteries. I had the same problem and once i replaced the battery my laptop was fine.

The heat in lap tops is a nuisance - because you can't use them on your lap?! What is that all about?
But apart from that, it's normal.
