I like the designs of laptops because it combines everything into one unit, and gets rid of the need for excess wires. I hate wires and bulkiness when it comes to computers, and want to have it as simple as possible. Is a laptop what I'm looking for? Or is it a waste of money when I don't intend to take it places?

No, laptops are great at home. Add wireless and you can surf on the couch, in bed, on the toilet, the backyard.... everywhere.

Laptops are harder to upgrade and to do your own work on.

Most of them are integrated so you can't change the Graphics Processor or the main processor.

Desktops can have more things in them (I have 3 hard drives in mine) and it is possible to add cards to them that will increase the computer's capability. I also upgraded my video card just this month.

I have 2 Gigabytes of memory, and like a notebook I can install more so that isn't a problem.

Notebooks have the added price of smaller, tighter and hotter. It costs more to do make something smaller for example hard drives for a notebook cost twice as much as the hard drive in a desktop and 1/2 the capacity. You can get larger hard drives in notebooks, but you have to pay for it.

2/3's of the size of the CPU is the heat sink and fan which is a limit on how good of one you can get. In a notebook that means the limits are tighter and the heat problem is greater.

If you get a printer, a scanner, or an external hard drive then you will have extra wires that tie into the computer. If you want a new or larger monitor then you will need to buy a new notebook or just get the new monitor for the desktop.

The best technology comes out in the Desktops first and then it is miniaturized for the notebooks.

When you upgrade the computer you will have to probably replace the notebook, but the desktop can be upgraded a peice at a time. You can keep the case for a desktop, but you will probably have to upgrade the rest of the guts of it. With a notebook you will have to upgrade or replace all of it at one time in one unit.

Heat kills a computer, with many notebooks that means a shorter lifespan. Desktops, especially if you have a large case can be run cooler and so survive longer. Of course often before the computer wears out the machine will be obsolete.

Stealing a notebook is easy, even if you get one with fingerprint ID a person can still walk off with it. Desktops are harder to walk off with.

If you don't need to carry the machine around then the best buy is usually the desktop. If wires are your major objection (I hate lose wires too) then you can buy/build a box and put holes in it. Then run the wires through the box storing the extra wire inside; that's what I do. Wires don't heat up, transformers do, but my box is big enough that I don't have to worry about that.

I would suggest a little Mac notebook. They are small, extremely user friendly, have excellent customer service, and don't get viruses. They last forever, and should you decide you would like to take your computer with you somewhere, it would be easy to put into a case and take it along! I have a Macbook Pro, but it is a 17" that I basically only use as a desktop. The only sacrifices I made were: lower sound quality from laptop speakers, and the fact that laptops tend to heat up when not placed on a solid surface.

Actually, my laptop inadvertently became a laptop for personal use only at home. Pretty much because it's a desktop replacement. So my suggestion to you - get a desktop replacement laptop. They are usually cheaper and will do everything a desktop does.

No it's actually pretty nice. Our computer is a laptop and it does all the same stuff as a regular computer only i can choose to sit at the table or sit on the couch and do stuff. The only thing is they may be a little bit more expensive than a destop computer.

Laptops are a bit fruitless at home unless you are big into wireless. My suggestion would be to get a desktop for home. They are more powerful and easy to use. Laptops are best on the go.

It is great, but don't take it in the kitchen and get it all greasy. Get a wireless adaptor so you have internet anywhere in the house.
