Most starters only need and few hundred amps to crank properly. You will not damage the starter but could damage the teeth on the flex plate the the starter gear engages while cranking.
The reason this might happen is the solenoid that actually engages the starter motor and pushes the gear into the flex plate might not get the right jolt of juice and the gear may not fully engage the entire length of the cranking process and shave off some of the gear teeth.

The main difference between battery sizes is determined more often by the number of electrical accessories you have in the car like power windows and seats and stereo and electric fuel pump and water pump and radiator fans and all that other stuff. In the good old days the only electrical accessory was the lights and maybe a radio.

Go with what is recommended and you can't go wrong.

Good Luck!

No. The starter will turn over as normal, just slower or not at all.
