I think because college age kids (me included) are realizing that we're going to get stuck with the problems of the future. As for "becoming republicans" I can't say but I can say that I started out college as a Republican but now I would most certainly not consider myself to be what that party has become. Also, I really don't think doing simple, cost-effective things to protect the environment is a "fantasty".

As I've said here at answers before, History repeats itself and I'll say it here as well.
Remember in the 60's when all the country was about Love, sex, rock and roll and the flower child movement? Well, personally, I just think this is Al Gore's way of stirring those emotions in the parents of all the college age kids and getting them to buy products associated with all of it. You know, these little farcicle B.S. things like the Concert held recently, all the protests, it all smacks of the 60's and the love children. There's going to be a repeat of something like these things at least every 20 years. And to answer the 2nd part of your ? - If you take a "childish person who doesn't understand what they're protesting and just following along to be part of the group?" Most likely, they will not grow out of it as you put it. They'll just get older and by their stupid living habits simply add to the problem. Now, if you take a person who is a Childlike individual, totally respectful of the people and their surroundings, yes, they are already a grownup and will most likely become someone who will aid the cause, ie: inventing something, being a serious activist politically or do something totally brand new. Just time will tell.

It is because they are educated. The reason you do not see them later is because they do not have the time because of jobs,families....whatever, Instead they donate money.
I always find it interesting that the Right-Wing Republicans always hate when children are educated. Mostly because if you have an ounce of intelligence they cannot use you as a pawn to blindly follow what they want you to do and say. Plus logic is commonly taught in college and anyone who understands logic can see through their lies and lame explanations for their actions.
That is also the reason the GOP Republicans always want to cut tuition assistance programs. Cannot increase the amount of educated people!

Several reasons
Once past high school and college, we need to both spend most of our time working our job, maybe raising next generation, and also staying out of trouble. An employee who is known for certain activism may have a hard time keeping employed.
Environmentalism is extremely complex. The younger a person is, the more easy to jump on what seems like an obvious bandwagon.

Don't insult me. I've actually noticed that most of the global warming alarmist crew are in high school. Their teachers make them watch The Inconvenient Truth. I used to buy into that crap before I went to college, where I learned to think for myself. I'll never become a republican though; that party has been ruined by the neo-cons.

well, to be honest, young people are either naiive and completly idiotic. This is coming from somebody who is 20, and was 18 in the 2004 Election. Everybody thought the youth vote was going to pave the way for John Kerry to win the election, but it didn't happen. I think the youth in this country will ***** about the person in charge, but won't do anything to make it better, like actually going out to vote. <.<. I lost faith in the youth of this country 2 years ago.

You aren't old enough to remember the 60's...but, let me tell you....it was the young people on college campuses who helped start the Civil Rights movement, the Womens Movement and they were the biggest reason the war in Vietnam came to an end.
Don't ever underestimate our young college-age folks. What we need is MORE of them who are passionate about ANYTHING......

Not likely. They have to live in the world the Republicans, neoconservatives, and special interests are destroying. So young people have a personal stake in stoppping them.
They also understand that the changes needed--reduced oil use, energy independance, new technologies and energy conservation--will create new industries, new jobs-and in the log run save consumers money. And since they are smart and educated enough to realize that--they're not going to buy into the propaganda of the neocons and the oil ccompanies.

Because if Republicans don't get their act together we're gonna have hurricanes in New York and worldwide famines from global warming. And don't take my word for it, the majority of the world's scientists agree.
