There are two central reasons that your laptop isn't able to play these videos well. First, many videos now use the H.264 codec which takes far more processing power than was used previously as a tradeoff for much better compression and thus much less space used. Thus, while old SD videos used to render just fine on your laptop, they won't always do it now because they're 'harder' to process. The only reason slow machines (iPhone, etc.) can run these videos so well today is because of hardware-based decoding. Second, Flash. Regardless of his reasoning, Jobs is very right about Flash video being the bane of computing. Flash is extremely inefficient and drags even modern computers down.

in the bios of the laptop can you adjust the memory?
maybe add some more memory and increase the shared memory to the card.
have a look at crucial.com to see what memory it takes.. perhaps look at ebuyer for memory prices also
if you are looking at laptops try here >
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/store/5/cat/Laptops
also use pricerunner.co.uk .. if you get a model number
you can't change the actual graphics card, only allocate it more memory if anything..
do you need a laptop? if not.. perhaps get a very fast desktop.. again ebuyer site.. "acer 3800 x2 " is good for £300, add another £100 for a monitor. and its good to go...
although i did add another gfx card and 2 gb memory as i'm using it for music and high end gaming.

With only 8MB of video RAM, your laptop is very old....maybe 2000 at the latest.
I'd take that 400 to PC world or the like where you will get a great machine for that money.
The old one....is too old. Sorry.
