but what else goes with the IP when I but IT in the Address bar, mY ISP is Charter

I suspect you really want to get to your router's configuration page. The IP address is most likely your default gateway address. Open command prompt (start, run - type in cmd and hit enter). At the prompt type in "ipconfig" without the quotes. You will be shown your pc IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway (probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 unless you changed the subnet). Enter the default gateway IP address into your browser and hit enter.

There were no "search engines" in 1988, on Usenet. There was just The Hierarchy and the The Cabal (but it wasn't, then, much of a cabal, just some admins trying to keep Usenet strung together with bobby pins, over telephone lines...). There was no Web, no pictures (to speak of), and not everybody had email. No IM, no gopher. ftp was big. WAIS was starting to get popular. Who still remembers gopher, or for that matter, WAIS?
