Ignore skinhead, he is a big wanker. Yes I think many people take it as an opportunity to speak more freely than if they were face to face.

I don't know that I mind so much. It means that things aren't on such an emotional level as if we were talking face to face. It gives a little more freedom to say what you want to without really hurting anyone's feelings too bad.
