is it still a katana if the blade is not curved?

After the 1400s, the katana was classified as a curved sword. Before that, the katana was just a type of Japanese backsword or longsword. Longswords are usually straight. So, a katana used to mean a Japanese sword, not necessarily straight. Now, though, it is only considered a katana if it is Japanese and curved.

Not sure, but I do know the Japanese first got hold of some Chinese swords which were long and straight and then copied them and went from there. The made a better sword than the Chinese had ever dreamed of. I collect ancient Chinese and Japanese coins and in some of the coin books a little history is also given. I got this info form a book written in the early 1800's by a missionary who wrote books on coins and other subjects. Hope this helps some.
