How do conduct an effective patten search on the US patten web site?

I have an idea and I need to do research on it but my searches turn up nothing usful how does one do an effective patten search??

By 'patten' do you mean patent? It would be useful to know what you are looking for. If you believe you have invented something, it is probably worth your time to consult a patent attorney. At the very least, they can tell you how to check to for an existing patent.
