I'm job hunting and it's taking FOREVER. I've never had this much trouble before. What's the longest amount of time you've been out of work?

Almost a year. Isn't that sad? I just said, "Meh, I don't feel like working anymore. I am going to school" and quit. It was nice. Then I wanted to work again real bad.

The past 2 years that I spent in nursing school I did not work. I'm glad I chose not to, because even though some people can make it work I also saw many of my classmates who did not pass because they were working too many hours and didn't have enough time to study.
It has been extremely hard getting by though.... I relied completely on student loans to pay for school and to live off of. I had no extra money and have almost completely forgotton what "extra" money is!
Now I owe quite a bit in loans, but employers will often help pay back loans if you are entering a career where there is a great need (nurses, teachers).
I graduated in May and am just getting ready to start my first nursing job - tomorrow actually. I have spent the last 2.5 months doing nothing but looking for a job. The most frustrating thing ever is the comment I have gotten from like, a million different people -- "I thought you would have no problem getting a job since there's such a shortage of nurses!". I could seriously punch somebody in the nose if I heard that one more time! It is true, there is a nursing shortage, but apparently they only want nurses WITH EXPERIENCE, which I do not have since I just graduated.
I honestly don't know how many times I heard, "sorry, we are not hiring new grads at this time. You need experience first."
So anyway, sorry to ramble on and on.... just wanted to let you know I feel your frustration!! It sucks! Especially when you desperately need money coming in!

7 Days, and I might suggest you expand your search, especially if your only searching in one career field or something your school trained in. Try something completely new, take a job at a lower level than you expected while your still searching. An employer conducting an interview sees a person that has a job already as interviewing from a position of power so don't underestimate the value of any job, even one you may think is below you.
Browse the newspaper but don't rely on it. Walking through doors often leads to jobs before it can even be advertised. Some job fields rarely advertise at all. Don't let this get you down, the job market is good, but expand that focus, you'll get to where you want to be.

3 months after college and 2.5 weeks more recently, when i was laid off. Have you tried Freelance work? I go through a company called Aquent.com and its not that bad...I have health/dental (at no cost to me), only draw-back is I don't get paid for any time off until I've been there about 1 year. But the pay is decent, so I figure why not?

Good Luck

For me it was four months. I had gotten pregnant and my husband didn't want me to work, so I left my job. Then three months later I had a miscarriage. A month after that I got a job.

Then, another time I decided to go tree planting for eight weeks. It was extremely physically and mentally demanding, and when I came home, I needed time to recuperate from the exhaustion. I was employed again two months later.

My mom has been with her boyfriend for over 9 months and he's been out of work since the day she met him. He's been an out of work electrician for over a year I think. He was practically homeless when my mom met him.

I quit my job to take a vacation and found new one a month later. Good luck man.

Sorry to hear that. I just started a job in June after 11 months. It was very difficult to go through so I know how frustrated you must feel. Hope you find the right job soon!

I was tempted to post this very question myself. I don't know about you, but I've got a couple of long unemployment gaps on my resume.

I think the longest time I've been out of work is 20 months.
