Chrysler actually builds a good mini van,its possible it was a mal-function or something that caused it,because that's not normal for one of those to go out with that little of mileage on it,it may have just been a bad transmission, because normally those last real good, but the real answer is probably the diff lock pin blew out and blew a hole in the case since that,s what chrysler transmissions are notorious for, that's all i can tell you about it,good luck with it.

Chrysler actually makes a pretty good minivan and I don't really think you got a lemon. You said you have had the car since it had 30,000 miles on it,and you take good care of it, but you have no real way of knowing what the former owner did to it(how they drove it,or took care of it) There is a chance that the tranny was going out when you got it. That maybe be why the former owner sold it. You can't really do anything now other then decide if you want to have it fixed or invest in a new auto. If you really want to know why the tranny failed about the only thing you can do is ask a good mechanic, sometimes they can tell you if the part showed a lot ot wear or if there was a fault in it to begin with. I wish you good luck on whatever you decide to do with it, but don't assume it was your fault or that the van was just bad, sometimes parts do just fail for reasons that can't be explained.

Hi.......thats a bummer. Maybe the previous owner towed things with it, you never know. Check your owners manual to see how often you need to flush and refill the transmission fluid. I generally get it done at a service shop every 15,000 miles on my car. I might be changing the transmission fluid a little more than usual, but i even have an antique Dodge that is over 30 years old, and still has the original transmission. Chrysler transmissions have been good to me, i have never had to replace one. My 1992 Dodge Spirit has 143K on it now, still the original trans, and it performs like new. Make sure the shop you use has a pressure machine to change ALL the fluid........this service usually runs $80-125, depending on where you live. Some shops just drain and refill, but that only gets half the fluid. The other half remains in the tourque converter and in the transmission cooler. Its also a good idea to drop the pan, and replace the filter in the transmission too, maybe every other time. Good Luck!!

i worked for a dodge dealer in the 80's and 90's ...this has been an issue since the first overdrive trans was made chrysler has made millions off consumers ... "superceding" or up dates to there junk trans has never fixed the issues...expect to replace trans every 70-90 k sometimes less...we stocked 35 transmissions at the dealership i worked at...no other dealers i worked for stocked any trans! i always advise anyone wanting a mini van to either save 2500 for trans or buy a different makers minivan...ford and chevy have very few issues...even when working for chrysler i did not buy there crappy vehicles...neon has no resale and junk engines...big chryslers have engine issues...buy ford and chevy ...maybe if enough people switch they will fix problem or go out of buisness...(there dakotas are the only vehicle worth buying...)but dakota gets crappy gas mileage compaired to ranger or s-10/colorado...

Sorry to say, it blew the transmission because it's a Chrysler product. It's the weak link in all their vehicles.
Don't believe me?

The previous owner probably did too many burnouts at the drag strip. Or maybe they were taking it to Wal-Mart for maintenance, the mechanics there are pretty good about ruining 1) engine 2) transmission 3) wheels.

Rack and pinion is going bad/leaking. Had same thing happen on a 2000 Caravan. Hard to steer at low speeds, easier at higher speeds but not quite right. Take to a garage for repairs, preferably a dealer, a little more expensive, but the job will be done right.

It's possible it was a manufactor error. It could have been numerous things. Nothing you could have done while driving. Unless you've been driving it hard, which I doubt. Take it to a delarship, and if its under warrenty then you got it made. If not, it could be just need to replce the gears, or the whole thing. Things happen
