It is all quite legal and here is a an actaual example from to day's newspaper, typical of most of them. They simply exploit people's ignorance of the rules of rounding:

A major finance company advertises that its lending rate is 8.4% APR and their accompanying table shows that for a loan of £10,000 over 120 months you would pay £122.05 per month,

If you calculate the true interest rate for these payments, you will find it is 8.447%. Of course in law, the company cannot be accused of telling lies, because to the first decimal place, the interest rate they are quoting is correct.

I note that some people misunderstood my point which is this: Since the true l interest charged is 8.447%, they should not be allowed to call it 8.4%

In the USA, they are required to divulge the effective rate in advance on the mortgage agreement.

The interest is compounded daily, and the daily rate is usually calculated by dividing the annual rate by 360 instead of 365 or 366 for leap years, which makes it even higher.

The same is true when finance companies pay you interest on your savings though, so you are doing it also.

They are NOT lying, you are misunderstanding the terms used. The first decimal place is NOT the issue. A 8.4% APR compounded monthly IS an 8.447% effective rate.

rather, each time one is approximately to do corporation with a huge fat corporation that has like, a gazillion a million/2-knowledgeable temp human beings to respond to the telephones and each little thing is depersonalized and could ensue by means of the interet and so-on, you danger 'falling in the process the cracks' of an in any different case nicely-intentioned corporation. I even have had some good bargains utilising internet commute shops, yet I even have consistently been responsive to the prospect i grew to become into taking, and that i've got been ripped off by potential of different agencies (non-commute however) by means of mis-extra advantageous promotion or that merely did no longer have their shite mutually. Expedia is probably no longer intenionally evil or attempting to tear human beings off. There could be a foul supervisor that has no longer gotten fired yet. Heck, the corporation could worry firing stupid human beings for worry of retribution. There could be gobs of purple-tape to maintain them from being immediately-foward, no count how lots they need they could as a corporation. they could merely be lazy each and every of how around, they could no longer be effectively speaking what they assume from their telephone human beings. there is even the prospect the the author of the internet internet site is mendacity or did no longer follow by means of on their end whilst they did no longer get their tickets and the blame is theirs too for no longer working with Expedia to verify the subject. could be lots of little issues that went incorrect and blew it up.
