I mean this totally respectfully.. not to insult anyone. I'm just wondering why this is a common trait?

The question was sparked because my husband and I were watching an episode of MTV's parental control last night that involved a gay male... and all of the gay males on the show had a lisp.. and it just got me kinda curious

I watched that last night too! The "bad" boyfriend was so hot! Anyway, most of my gay friends do have this lisp you are talking about. I don't think it's so much a lisp as it is a societal thing. Like how friends tend to talk the same, with the same inflection. However, that's just an idea.

So that means most gay men have a lisp... you and your husband must be rocket scientist if you get all your information about the world from MTV!

Kind of curious, Do you guys live in a single or double wide?

Television loves to have the obvious. Stereotypes abound because they are easy to understand. But yes there are the ones who lisp and BAD sometimes. Part of it is a rebellion streak i think that empasises the queerness. But then when i was just a kid there was one kid that rode our bus and he had a lisp in third grade!!!

I'm not sure it actually is a common trait, considering that I know many gay males and not a one of them has a lisp. It may just be a stereotype.

I never heard this one. I have talked to plenty of gay men but never noticed a lisp. Maybe their talking like that on purpose? Just a guess.

Hah! I'm gay and don't have one, but I do know an awful lot of guys that do. I really believe that more most guys it is an affectation. The % of the population that actually have genuine lisps is tiny....I mean come on...of course maybe this plays into the whole gene theory...Hhhmmmm...

It's not a settled issue, but the article referenced in the link below discusses some theories about it.
