Because by the 7th inning we're all delusional. We need to be reminded to "take (our mind back) to the ball game"...

Seems like they should sing this before the game starts, huh?

The words to the song were written by a guy who had never been to a ball game. He was on an elevated train on his way to the Polo Grounds in NYC at the time. He wrote the words for only one other classic song: "Shine On Harvest Moon". Since we have so many night games now, especially in the minor leagues, maybe we ought to give that one a try. I get tired of hearing fans sing about "cracker jacks" when the words are "cracker jack".

Because it is the Done Thing.

It's called the seventh inning stretch, it's old, traditional, and has Presidential origins. And it's fun. Does any other sport have such a delightful theme song?
