I don't think one can become more intelligent. That relates to ability and is set. One can become more educated, or sophisticated, or cynical; I relate those things to high intelligence, but one can't acquire intelligence.

Jen, I don't believe there is a book on common knowledge. I've never heard of one. Some much common knowledge comes with being an independent individual. Life experience is some of the best knowledge you will ever gain. You could start by getting a credit card or checking account and learning how interest works and how to control your spending. If you are are age where you don't have any bills, ask your parents to be in charge of paying one or more of them on time over the next several months. Get yourself a Palm and start planning for the things you need to accomplish. And try to think like a responsible adult.

You can't really become more intelligent...intelligence is a sort of fixed quality, you can't really gain any more of it. You can only gain more knowledge.

But as far as gaining more knowledge, really ANY book would be fine. Even if it's just a fiction novel, you're still expanding your horizons. I'd suggest reading your local newspaper to keep up to date on current events, and maybe subscribing to some online newsletters (perhaps several, from a wide range of different political orientations) that discuss political and social issues. Having more than one side will help you be more open-minded.

I may be wrong but I think to focus on intelligence is to miss the point. Intelligence is always a fuzzy concept that cannot adequately be pinned down. I think the best answer to your question is to find something, anything that you are really passionate about. Whether that is something like motorcycles, chemistry, how to carbonate soda, cooking, or biology. Then, aim that passion at learning all that you can about that subject. You will find that to know one subject well is to know other things too. Much knowledge is interdependent so it matters less about knowledge itself and more about where your interests lie.

It depends on what your definition of intelligence is. For me, it is how you apply the knowledge you have gained. Try to find something, like programming, that allow you to use previous skills in new ways to build upon your knowledge.

I think you are looking for "more aware". We all have basic intelligence and it is up to each person to increase their knowledge. Knowing something is one thing, being aware of all the aspects of that thing is being intelligent about it. It is the difference in being the student or the professor. Growing in what you know is up to you and your approach in learning. You can have an open mind or tunnel vision. Intelligence is determined by interpretation and application.

Any book that causes you to think and to question and to wonder. A book that takes you some place you have never been before (KLS)
