Since the actual cause of appendicitis or an inflamed appendix is unknown, there are no strategies to prevent it. How can something be prevented when the cause is unknown?

Many things have been tried but all have proven unreliable. Things that have been tried are:
breast feeding
high fiber diet
avoiding certain infections (which ones were never documented)
a diet that is high in fruits, particularly tomatoes,
and veggies, particularly green ones

It used to be thought that swallowing pits from fruits caused appendicitis. That they pits collected in that little pouch setting up a massive infection. It was also found to have no basis in fact.

No, a "gene" or trait has never, ever been identified nor has a familial tendency. You can have a family of over 100 members on only one will have had appendicitis. There is no link.
