Definitely a mud dauber. Mud daubers make their nests out of mud and house their babies in there. Mud daubers are non aggressive and will NOT sting except as a very last resort. I've laid my hand on them before and never been stung. They are also very beneficial in that they kill and eat the bugs we don't want around. Their favorite treat is the black widow spider. So if you can tolerate their nests which I know are unattractive then you have some little allies living in your yard. If not, then wait until they are off gathering mud or insects and just knock the mud house down and they may relocate.
Here is a site that explains it all.

I used to be wasp phobic and had trouble gardening which I love until I researched these guys years ago and discovered they are docile and beneficial. Now, instead of running around screaming like a lunatic when one comes around, I've learned to work side by side with them and they don't even mind.

It's a type of a moth that I run into at work a lot, especially in roll out windows. They tend to produce a type of cotton in the sack that makes it noticably different from a mud wasp.

They are called mud daubers. They can sting but it is rare because they are usually not aggresive. If you put the name in a search on yahoo it will bring up more info and some pics for you. They do lay eggs in those mud nest as well.

What is the size and color? Praying Mantis nests are oblong and attach flat to the wall and when they hatch out it looks like a flat honeycomb. But they are only about an inch long and a half inch or less in width.

It is, most likely, a mud dabber, a black, wasp-like insect.
