They are small files that are stored on your computer that store information from the internet like usernames and passwords.

For example if you sign into Yahoo! and it asks you if you would like to be remembered so you don't have to log in next time. this would create a file with your login details that the site will access next time you go onto Yahoo! meaning you won't have to sign in again

They are used for other information other than usernamess but that is 1 use for them
