If your pipes aren't metal, it doesn't do much good to use a metal detector and you didn't specify if they were or not. But many pipes nowadays underground are PVC. The best way to follow them is to locate the pipes initially, which may require a bit of digging to locate them. But after finding them, look for the direction they are laid and follow it for 10 feet, then dig again. Most joints are either 10 or 20 feet in length so going each 10 feet will help you realize which way they are going. If you lose it at 10 foot, go back to 5 foot and relocate it if it has been either 90 degreed or 45 degreed. In our business, we have found this to be the most efficient way of doing it without tearing up a lawn so badly.
Best of luck.

Go to a construction tool rental shop. They should have a glorified metal detector to pick up any metal utility pipes or ducts. Alternatively start digging.

Check in your phonebook. There should be a number to call. They will send the companies out to mark your yard. I just had mine done in Louisiana a few months ago. I called 1 number and had all lines marked within 3 days.

Gentle, exploratory digging. If the pipes are metal, then the previous answer to use a metal detector will help. If not metal, then use gentle exploratory digging.
