I was just in a car accident. The car in front of me stopped at a poorly placed cross walk, so I stopped too, but the SUV behind me didnt....he smashed right into the back of my car. My car only sustained relatively minor damage to the trunk...it will probably cost around $1500 to fix I would think. He didnt want to go through insurance, so against my better judgment just got all of his insurance info, license plate, address, and phone number. We didnt call the cops. No pictures. etc. Am I going to be sorry about this? what should I do? Is there anything I can do to protect myself if this guy turns out to be a jerk who doesnt pay up?

It's still not too late. Get right down to your local police station and submit that report; and I mean now. There was more than likely a reason why he didn't want you to file a report.

I had the same thing happen to me once when I was barely 20 and I let the other individual talk me out of doing same. But after I got to thinking about it I grew more and more suspicious until I just finally went down to the police station and took care of it. Turned out the reason why this person didn't want me to file was because their insurance and license had been revoked for some reason.

yes
No police report--he can say he wasn't involved. You don't have any police report to show his insurance co it was his fault--so if he doesn't pay up, you'll have a hard time getting them to pay up.
Im sure you were trying to be nice--but it's always best to just call the cops if the other person is at fault.
Otherwise, you're likely to end up with a damaged car and no way to fix it.
Hope this isn't the case for you this time...

If you are not at fault. Always, always, always. Get a police report. If you are at fault never admit it.
The police will frown on you for calling them for a minor collision. Forget that. Protect yourself and get a police report. You may be alright but what if the other guy stiffs you and says its his word against yours. Your out of luck. You backed into him. Your law suit is out the window. Always get a police report

well since the back end of your car is what is hurt it is going to be pretty difficult for him to say he didnt run into you. A police report would have helped but its not really needed. Just give your insurance company all his info and explain exactly what happened and they should take care of it.

Yes, you will be sorry.

Without a police report, you have no way to ensure he is going to pay for your damages and YOU have no legal leg to stand on. Your own insurance company can drop you if you approach them to pay for repairs.

Make a police report....

You should have insisted that it was investigated or at least filed a report with the police, which you can do by going to the police dept.

call your insurance company and let them know. They can get your car fixed and go after his insurance company to pay for it.
